Comments
Comments: Bare ground at the trailhead, gradually giving over to icy crust, then snow, then deep snow, 12-18 inches and still powdery, up high. Drifted thigh-deep in spots. Carter-Moriah had been broken out from the Gorham NH trailhead to the summit. From the summit to the jct w/Stony Brook and down Stony Brook had not been used at all since Friday's big snow. Although we did meet one party of two, who were chugging their way up Stony Brook, as we descended.

Microspikes were helpful. Snowshoes would have been very, very useful, had we not left them in the car. Poles with snow baskets. Even after today's traffic, snowshoes are still highly recommended for this loop, and you'll want to do it clockwise, as we did, to tackle the deepest, least-consolidated powder on descent vs. ascent.

True winter conditions are here - at last! ...And there was great rejoicing. Great views of the Presidentials, brooding under heavy clouds. It was very, very nice to be out again after being laid low by pneumonia for two weeks. Thanks to Foster and John for a very rewarding day.
