Comments
Comments: I've been waiting a while for the perfect day to get out for my winter Bonds and yesterday was definitely it! My adventure buddy and I got an early start, likely on the trail by 5:15. We cross country skied in the first 5.3 miles of Lincoln Woods and then switched to spikes which were our preference until we summited Bondcliff. Soon thereafter, the mix of drifting snow that wasn't yet entirely packed out yet and frozen patches of crust made for a swap to snowshoes. After fueling up on Bondcliff, we headed out to Bond. By this point there were 5 before us. One turned around as she had been hoping to spike all day but the warm sun made her change her plans. It's too bad too because she had followed someone off trail and the unpacked conditions were what inspired her to turn around. Unfortunately others followed the false turn too. If you're heading out, be aware of this spot. While climbing up to Bond, soon after entering the trees again, you'll see that the trail splits off to the left, the middle, and the right. You will want to stay to the right to be on trail. On our way to West Bond we passed a happy bunch out doing a traverse and spotted our only dog of the day. On our way back, we arrived just in time to be a part of a finisher's winter 48 on Bond! CONGRATULATIONS!!! After the celebration, we headed back to Bondcliff and after summiting, switched back to spikes so that we could butt sled our way out. There weren't too many awesome spots but we really enjoyed the ones we had. After a few miles we were happy to see our skies waiting for us to be able to ski out the last 5.3 miles. We ended up back to the car by 6:15. By the time we reached West Bond, all trails had been well packed down. If temperatures get cold, spikes might do. You'll want snowshoes for the warmer mashed potato snow that warm afternoon suns create.
