Great day to be at high elevation lots of hikers all over the mountains. I saw a range of traction being used from spikes to full crampons (my choice too) and snowshoes. Going up with snowshoes would’ve been ideal to utilize the heel lift bar and get less of a leg workout. Crampons descending were definitely the way to go. I wouldn’t have wanted to use just spikes today but I saw lots of people getting by. The snow in the morning was packed but once the sun came up and I hit treeline the snow became mashed potatoes in areas. Throughout the day it worsened and made descending slightly tedious until a bigger guy butt sled all the way down ammo for me and packed it down. I usually descend via jewel but the extra miles and less step route wasn’t appealing today for some reason. |
