Comments
Comments: The day didn't start out the way the weather forecast had predicted. All the peaks were in the clouds and the trees up high had rime ice on them. It finally cleared by noon soon followed by blue sky. We barebooted up to the Lonesome Lake hut, put on microspikes and at the jct. of Mt. Kinsman trail put on our snowshoes as the monorail became very unstable and postholing was unavoidable. Kept the snowshoes on until we reached the hut on our return hike. There was some soft ice on the steep sections on Fishin' Jimmy trail but with traction devices and holding on to trees it was fine to get up and down alright. We did break through to the water on the first steep section, so care should be taken on the first steep section. We met a few hikers from Boston who thought the snow was gone. They were surprised by the depth of the snow in the woods and because of their constant postholing turned around. Other hikers with snowshoed did just fine. It was a great day to finish my April Grid list with the companionship of Per and our three dogs.
