I took three kids up this trail to the hut. Great starter trail for introduction to winter hikes. From the trailhead to the junction with Carter Dome trail it is a super packed highway. Spikes would be fine in temps at or below freezing. After the junction the snow got deeper and deeper and more powdery. Snowshoes were the way to go to keep one floating on top of the monorail.
We passed two persons ascending wearing spikes and postholing pretty bad on our way back. It did not look like fun. The kids and I tried to smooth over the holes but they were very deep. This is a kind of “learning†trail so I won’t fuss too much about mucking up the trail. To note, even the 6 year old in my group was wearing snowshoes...
This trail is well blazed in blue. It is popular so it is often broken out immediately after storms. Signs and blazes are still above the snowpack. Carter Dome trail and the Carter-Moriah trail towards both Carter Dome and Wildcat A were broken out when we passed them. |
