We made an attempt on Mt. Dartmouth, a trailless peak near Jefferson Notch. We hiked up along the snowmobile trail to the height of land, then set out along the Dartmouth Range, breaking trail through several feet of snow. We found that sticking to the north slope of the range was the way to go, since the ridge had some serious blowdowns. The north slope was easy going through open woods.
Ultimately, we decided to turn around about half a mile from the summit in order to get back before dark. That said, there's now a broken-out path most of the way to Mt. Dartmouth, so if anyone wants to give it a go now is the time! Overall a great day in the Whites. |
