Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Twin Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Old snowmobile trail, Haystack Road, North Twin Trail, bushwhack
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, February 16, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at Seven Dwarfs (across the Little River Road from the motel) (left an envelope with $10 and a thank-you note on the windshield). Space for about 4 to 6 cars there; it looked like maybe some others had parked in the normal motel lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The bushwhack avoids the two lower crossings of the Little River; the third crossing is well ice-and-snow bridged. There were a few open drainages here and there. There is an open streamlet at about 2800 feet which is a bit awkward, but there is an all-snow detour just above it.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of step-over blowdowns and duck-under blowdowns - none major. Some brushing could be done higher up on the North Twin Trail, but some of the issue could be ice- and snow-laden softwoods, plus three feet or more of snow depth. Signage seemed okay. Blazing seemed sparse.

Comments
Comments: Walked the Little River Road the short distance from the motel to the end of the Road. Took the bridge and then the old snowmobile trail (NOT the old hiking trail/railroad bed) to Haystack Road, followed this Road (in this location also a designated snowmobile route) south to the North Twin Trailhead. Trail had a little new snow over a firmish base.

Just about everyone had used the bushwhack between the first and second crossings of the Little River. By the end of the day, there was a very good snowshoe track from the trailhead to the summit of North Twin; probably a dozen folks also snowshoed over the North Twin Spur to South Twin (some were planning to head down South Twin to Galehead and then out the Gale River Trail).
