Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Northeast Cannonball (attempt), NH
Trails
Trails: Lonesome Lake Trail, Around-Lonesome-Lake Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, February 16, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There wasn't much space in the Southbound Lonesome Lake/Lafayette Campground parking area, so I parked in the much larger northbound lot. That lot was mostly full but still had a few open spots.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable)
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All were bridged, though some of those bridges were narrow, and the snow on them was slippery, so caution should be exercised.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There were several skinny trees whose branches had so much ice and snow on them that they bent over and formed an arch over the trail. I could walk under them, but taller people with large packs might have to bend over. Besides that, the trails were in very good shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw at least a half-dozen of them. Trail conditions are relatively good for them. To my gratification, all the dogs I passed today were well-behaved - no licking, no touching, very little sniffing, and, best of all, no barking! Thank you to those dog owners who have trained your dogs well.
Bugs
Bugs: LOL.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A black glove was hanging from a tree right near the trailhead of Lonesome Lake Trail.

Comments
Comments: Fun day in the winter wonderland. Lonesome Lake Trail up to the lake can be done in spikes - it's packed down pretty well. Right at the lake, I put on snowshoes and kept them on for the remainder of the hike. Lonesome Lake Trail from the lake to Kinsman Ridge Trail is best done in snowshoes - the trail surface hasn't completely firmed up yet, and there's still plenty of loose powder, so spikes might not give enough traction to make it up (and down) the steep sections. Since 1) I was hiking solo, and 2) Kinsman Ridge Trail going up to the Northeast Cannonball looked like it hadn't been used this weekend and is pretty steep, I decided to turn around at the junction. Kinsman Ridge Trail going towards Cannon was used by several people today. I stopped off at the hut before heading down. There seems to be about three feet of snow around Lonesome Lake.

Dodge Cutoff was packed out, Hi-Cannon Trail looked to be somewhat packed out, and Pemi Trail going north from Lafayette Campground was totally untouched. Saw a lot of snowmobiles using the bike path.
