We took this ascent with the current forecast in mind: 10 degrees with -55 wind chill on the summit. So we were prepared for zero skin exposure. We began the hike at about 10 degrees (F) but by the time we reached the summit (around 11:30) it was 23F with ZERO wind, and crystal clear skies. Awesome views, great people on the trail, a great day for the hike. Lesson learned: always prepare for the worst but enjoy day when you win the hiking lottery.
The others in my group started out with microspikes. About half-way up, I put on my kahtoolas although it really wasn't necessary until you got to the last 100yds. At that point, the snow was crusty enough for the spikes to really bite.
Trail is very established by other snowshoers and hikers. Very hard to get lost. |
