Snow shoes up Wonalancet Range trail. It is beautifully packed, nice and soft thanks to Kevin who broke it out yesterday. The ledges just after the shortcut junction were not an issue - stayed off them and in the woods to the right instead. From Mt Wonalancet over to Hibbard was also nice and soft and just very peaceful. Just after the Hibbard summit at lookout to the west the packed out trail ended. We broke out the trail for the 1/2 mile over to Walden. Walden was not broken out in either direction. We broke it out for another 1/2 mile until the steep section just above the four-way trail intersection where some folks had attempted to ascend but were unable. As they descended they were doing some butt sledding and that made the descent extremely slick. Crampons and an ice axe would have been appropriate here - we didn't carry them and so we whacked around the steepest parts using the deep snow and trees to get down. Heading up Walden through this section without crampons would not be possible, although since most of the snow is now pushed off you might make it in spikes but I wouldn't recommend it. Old mast was packed and soft and a nice two mile downhill back to the parking lot. |
