Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Knights Pond Conservation Area, NH
Trails
Trails: Road walk, Access Road, Knights Pond Loop, Peninsula Loop
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, February 16, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: A truck made it down to the open area right before the summer parking lot and it looks like others have as well but we and everyone else parked at the start of Knights Pond Rd. In doing so someone blocked the truck that was further in but they couldn’t have known it at the time. You can fit 4 cars in there if you block the road. The roads in were fine but the parking area might be troublesome for 2WD vehicles and low-clearance.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There’s a cool bridge over beaver pond part. Reminded me of Zealand Trail’s bridges a bit. It was in good shape. Nothing else of significance.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail was very well blazed in blue diamonds and in older blue blaze. The Peninsula Loop has white diamonds. The trails aren’t signed but well blazed and The intersection of at least these two trails was obvious. I did not see where the boulder loop shown on the map was. There was an obvious path (packed out) maybe a couple tenths of a mile before (we travelled counter-clockwise) the peninsula loop but it was on the wrong side of it according to the map so that wasn’t it. The path had no blaze; perhaps it was something coming from private property? I believe there were just two duck unders. Nothing to worry about.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one well behaved dog unleashed. There was lots of older dog poop on the trail. Please pick up after your dog.
Bugs
Bugs: Snowfleas were seen at a little view spur along the peninsula loop. First time my parents had seen them!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: We started at 9:30am and it was 26F. We finished at 12:15pm and it had risen to 34F. Mostly cloudy. Including the added road walk from the start of Knights Pond Rd the hike was about 3 3/4 mi with 200-250ft of elevation gain. Very nice and easy hike that even my family was able to avg about 1.5mph on. We all enjoyed this loop and I especially liked the part around the beaver pond :)

Some people used snowshoes for a time but I’d leave them at home until we get more snow for this one. They could be a little useful on the road but the trail is too bony for them. The surface is mostly frozen granular mixed with a little ice. I’d carry light traction but I got by without putting mine on.

We saw 5 others on the trail today so parking could become an issue. The link below is to the town of Alton’s town website where if you scroll down on the pg you’ll find a map of the trails here (there were none at the kiosk).
