After seeing previous reports regarding Wanosha Road parking and the landowner AND seeing a report on Peakbagger that the Brown Ash Swamp Mtn - South Peak is now posted, I decided to venture to the north and approach from Johnson Brook Road. (See Comments) |

Almost immediately after turning onto Johnson Brook Road you will encounter an open gate that has a sign that says 'Do Not Enter' but we drove another tenth of a mile and spoke to the land owner at # 159 and he said that it would be ok for us to park in the plowed out area just prior to the bridge near his home. (Room for two vehicles) From there we walked up the road to the next bridge (about .4 miles for where we parked) and entered the woods just prior to that taking the water crossing of Johnson Brook out of the picture. There is also a Forest Boundary sign at this location as well.
The landowner said that hikers routinely parked along the road (probably in the summer) to access the old Brown Ash Swamp Trail and he said that it was difficult to follow in places and beginning to be overgrown.
He really appreciated that we requested his permission to park where we did. (I don't believe that this portion of Johnson Brook Road is town maintained and is really driveway to the camps beyond the first bridge). My point being, Respect the local landowner's wishes and speak with them if possible.
The whack itself was mostly through open woods with some whippy stuff initially, we ran into a small fir band but could easily navigate through and around it. The summit has several 'bumps' without a designated marker so after visiting all of the possible high points we knew we had hit the highest. There were several large blow downs covered in the 2' plus of snow that could have hidden the designated summit. A very pleasant day in beautiful weather. |
