Comments
Comments: i opted to walk up smith pond road and pick up the trails farther up rather than following the trail immediately leaving the trailhead. packed tracks from a vehicle and other snowshoes made it quick once off the plowed road past the gate.

shortly after the trail from the parking rejoins i turned right onto the half mile pond trail. the trail has been re routed since my last trip and though less direct to the pond its a really nice snowshoe trail with a good viewpoint along the way. a set of snowshoe tracks went about 2/3 of the way to the pond then turned off to points unknown. i mistakingly continued following the tracks farther than i should have before realizing it and backtracked to the trail to finish breaking it out to the pond. sinking 6+ inches with a layer cake of snow with a crust down a couple inches. not too bad, but a little slow. once at the pond i walked a short distance around the eastern shore then took a line on the highpoint of prospect hill. mostly open woods all the way to the summit with deeper snow and tougher breaking. i returned in my tracks.
