 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked at jct of Parmachenee Rd. and Abbott Brook Rd. - 3.6 miles from RT.16
Parking area, not recently plowed, had about 4-6" powder. Road plow had created a 16" barrier that had hardened considerably. We shoveled a path through the barrier to access parking. The area was plowed when we returned to the car.
Parmachenee Rd. well plowed, no salt/sand, suitable for any vehicle.

The car's thermometer read 24-below, but it didn't feel that cold due to the total absence of wind.
From the car we snowshoed Abbott Brook Rd. It was not plowed but had been recently snomoed although not groomed this season.
Just before the 2-mile marker we started the bw on a large, rutted logging road that eventually became a skidder road. Within a few hundred feet of the summit
we hit a blockade of snow laden spruce and scratchy stuff. We then turned south into wide open hardwoods and skirted the thick stuff until we pushed for the summit.
Just as we were about to give up finding the bottle, we saw its blue cover approx 6" above the snow.
breaking conditions - 2-3" powder on an unsupportive crust creating annoying conditions - total breaking depth of 4-6"
grades - always easy
vegetation - mostly clearcuts. No sprucy areas. Summit is mostly scratchy, rarely thick. Snow laden branches of larger spruce/fir created obstacles |
