New snow, about 3-5 inches, more from drifts up higher, merited snowshoes. The trail had been nicely packed prior to this snowfall so it was not too difficult to snowshoe the new path. There was more trouble with the drooping branches across the trail from the heavy laden trees than anything else. But they were easy enough to maneuver around or under without too much effort. Just a bit annoying. Snow cover is good at this point but not yet packed solid so without snowshoes it will probably feel like walking in beach sand. Trail is in good shape though and ready for more hikers. Views along the way and from the top were awesome. No winds today, all sunshine and frigid temps (10F to 16F degrees while we were up there)made for a most enjoyable trek. Worth the side trip near the beginning to view the Lime Kilns. Pretty impressive! |
