Packed powder heading up to the Greenleaf Hut. Not nearly as much snow as you'd think for a January hike. Periodically patches of ice on steeper rock slabs. Everyone, incidentally, was wearing spikes today. Lafayette was well trampled and a big group of AMC hikers came through and celebrated a member's 48th winter peak. Congrats to him!
The Ridge heading towards Lincoln and Lil Haystack was a packed powder sidewalk with occasional patches of bare rocks and even dirt. Tough on the micro-spikes. Falling Waters Trail was more of the same - packed powder with the occasional icy slab all the way back to the parking lot. While the weather was overcast, there was virtually no wind and temps in the 30s. Most of my cold weather gear - puffy jacket, wind jacket, gaiters and snowshoes ended up staying in backpack the whole day. All in all, felt more like an early Spring hike than a Winter hike. |
