Comments
Comments: We parked at the cog and went up/back the Jewell Trail to Gulfside to Jefferson. We used spikes the whole day and everyone we encountered on the trail was also using spikes although there is now enough snow to use snowshoes the whole way if you prefer. The lower part of the Jewell trail is in good shape and well packed. The half mile below tree line was fine on the way up but on the way down two large groups we saw had done a job on it. There was still a firm base but there was enough snow on top to make it uneven and difficult to get flat footing so it slowed us down a bit as we stumbled between boot prints. This section needs a couple people with snowshoes to pack it down before it freezes that way. Above tree line on Jewell there was more snow than I expected even though I had been there just a week earlier when there was a lot of bare rock. There was not a well defined packed path and people had taken various routes up when they couldn't find cairns. Still there was no real post holing as long as you stayed on one of the more used paths. Gulfside near Clay still had a fair amount of snow but it was better packed and not a problem. Beyond that it was easy hiking on packed snow. Most rocks are covered.
