A perfect sunny windless day above treeline today. Used traction all the way up Jewell to the Gulfside junction where we switched to snowshoes, mostly because I didn't feel like carrying them on my back. Snowshoes did help with the hidden spruce trap or drift here and there to Jefferson, but traction probably would have been fine and allowed for less side stepping. Backtracking on Gulfside towards Washington had not been touched, but still wasn't too bad. Snowshoes were helpful, but there really isn't a lot of powder right now. Coming down Crawford from Washington was the prefect combination of packed powder and loose granular to allow for a very rapid descent. Got from Washington to Lakes of the clouds in 20 minutes. There is an enormous ice rink right beside the hut, looks like there was a flood that quickly froze solid. But it doesn't block the trail so it's not an issue, just cool to look at. Ammo was packed all the way down and easily done in just traction. |
