Took Hi-Cannon from the Lonesome Lake trail, which certainly turned into one heck of an expedition. Hi-Cannon is extremely steep, with varying degrees of packed/rototilled powder, quality snowshoes are recommended. Got within a half mile of the summit to Cannon Mountain but had to turn back due to a near vertical slab of ice which was insurmountable without an ice pick and crampons. I had the crampons, but no ice pick unfortunately. Decided to try seeing how far I could get down Kinsman Junction as a backup plan. Only one pair of footprints from a bare booter were there before me, so I followed their trail and packed it down with my snowshoes. Turned back after a mile or so due to time constraints, there was PLENTY of butt sliding down Kinsman Junction and Hi-Cannon on my descent. Unfortunately did not meet any of the goals I set for myself today, but still enjoyed a beautiful Spring-like day in the mountains. Also saw two C-130's fly through the Notch at near eye-level with myself (1,000 feet or so) on my descent of Lonesome Lake trail to the parking lot. What a sight and sound! |
