Comments
Comments: mix of bare trail, snow and mud up to wilderness boundary. snow was hard in the morning and quite soft in the afternoon. past the wilderness boundary was a solid snow rail in the morning, but it was soft and unstable in the afternoon. much of the way there was room to walk beside it while staying on the trail with some long bare stretches. a lot of melt down low over the course of the day. bondcliff trail much of the same until through the relocated section of trail and then full snow coverage to bondcliff. got pretty soft down low later in the day and stepping off the solid rail in the trail resulted in posting through even in snowshoes. small layer of new snow was real sticky with a slick base higher up which led to some sliding around. nasty sidehill just before last crossing of black brook and the switchbacks. from bondcliff to bond there was new sloppy snow necessitating light traction. missed the right turn near scrub line on bond and bushwacked most of the way to the summit. followed the trail proper on the descent. deep snow remains on the ridge beyond bond to west bond. real tough snow conditions with new sticky snow over a hard slick base. would ball up fast and send you flying. i went down a number of times.
booted until after first black brook crossing when i started punching through. snowshoes to bondcliff then light traction across open section of ridge. then snowshoes over bond and west bond. pushed the snowshoes a bit farther on the descent from bondcliff as things were really soft in the afternoon.
great day to hike the bonds. moderate temps and little wind up high. definitely some interesting conditions underfoot in sections. spring is certainly here. a beautiful day on three of my favorite peaks. nice to be out.
