Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Downes Brook was wicked sketchy. Flowing very high due to the recent warm temps, but refreezing. Where the trail is blazed across was not doable, and I walked up the bank a ways looking for a better spot. Didn't find anything, as the opposite side looked like it was non-walkable. Moved north along the brook and found a decent area with what looked to be snow covered rocks and solid ice stretches. During the crossing, the ice broke a bit (was soft into small pools below) but not enough to completely go through. Was more cautious than usual as I didn't want my dog to get soaked before traipsing through the powder. All others were either frozen, filled with snow, or just a step over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Nothing of note, blazes are just where you need them, especially when I was breaking trail and the footbed wasn't clear. A couple small blowdowns but nothing of note. Appeared that there had been some butt-sledders up high below the first outlook opening, creating a little bowl trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: My lab had a blast.
Bugs
Bugs: A little chilly for them.

Comments
Comments: Wanted to do a bit of red-lining so started here in the morning before working down the Kanc. As noted above, the crossing of Downes brook was interesting. Trail was broken out quite well to there, but it looks like everyone else turned back. I crossed and broke trail from the brook up to the fire road crossing. It looks like a small group had come up that road to reach the trail and on to the summit. Very well trodden path with just 1"-2" of powder on top. Snow shoes car to car as it's not a 100% solid monorail yet. Nothing other to note except that the brook should be solidly frozen by now given the temps. Easy to follow path, although the short section between the brook and the fire road is not anywhere near compacted.
