Many thanks to Declan and Courtney for being ahead of us this morning and taking care of trailbreaking/snow packing. It was nice meeting both of them.
Others had been out to Owls Head over the weekend, and I am grateful to them for their trailbreaking! However, halfway up the Brutus Bushwhack, those weekend snowshoe tracks go the wrong way and dead end in a place that is not the summit. So when you do Owls Head this week, before the next snowfall, when you come to the split in the tracks halfway up Brutus, take the left. Don’t keep going up (and then to the right). The tracks to the left are the way to the summit, even if it looks like the tracks to the right have more snowshoe traffic. Take the left.
Snowshoes were a must today, even on Lincoln Woods Trail. Soft snow. Irritating, actually - felt like one step up and two steps sliding back on every steep bit. Also was cold cold cold. Difficult to stay warm for some reason, even though we have hiked in far colder weather. Still, we made it.
Snow is still too soft for microspikes. You are not going to want to do Owls Head without snowshoes for at least the next couple of days. I say this as a person who hates wearing them. They were necessary today and we could not have summited without them. |
