Surface Conditions

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hop.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I recall 3 blowdowns on Glencliff, 1 an easy duckunder, and two that are now easy stepovers. One of these will require an axe or chain saw.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The mighty tough little dog had an easy day, but he did have to work a bit on the steeper icy sections up high on Glencliff since the ice and powder on it made for poor traction while I was using microspikes. Pepper also took it easy on the return downhills in these areas. Otherwise, it was piece of cake with great views on top.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: I wanted to do one of the 5K peaks but the trip reports suggested crampons/ice axe were needed and it would be dangerous for dogs. So on such a beautiful sunny day with low wind, Moosilauke seemed like an ideal destination, and it was. We saw only three others, Rick in his MSRs, also on Glencliff, and two young guys who barebooted up the Gorge Brook and planned on going down the Carriage Path and Snapper. High clouds rolled in for our leisurely summit stop but then rolled out for a fun and fast descent. The monorail was spotty down low but solid and icy after awhile, making light traction very helpful. Up on the summit cone, it was a mixture of ice, rock and crust which were again perfect for microspikes. The only problem was the hike was over too soon.
