Comments
Comments: Gorge Brook to summit. Started at 9AM to avoid possible slush. No worries as surface was hard packed with crust. Bridges in good shape. Scattered post holes. Above "last sure water" sign at 3300 ft encountered some harder ice patches. Brought snow shoes and used them up steep sections for traction. At the scrub pine level, lots of rime. Scrambled over ice covered bolders in alpine area to summit. Looked like another hiker had come and gone by another path shortly before us. Mild cloud cover at the summit just after noon but could make out cairns on path. Path down toward South Summit was harder ice among boulders - crampons would have been ideal. Single hiker met up with us on the way down; he had crampons and was moving pretty quickly. Carriage and Snapper were soft corn snow on solid base as sun poked through a few times. Hiker with crampons left them on without issue. Probably mid-forties by this time. Snow shoes provided some stability on the soft stuff and around postholes; not really necessary but a little insurance for tired ankles.
