Comments
Comments: I used snowshoes from the car but one of us bare-booted to within a few minutes of the A-Z junction and you could probably do fine with spikes to Avalon Peak. After that there are some softer areas and I think snowshoes are the better choice. I definitely recommended them between Field and Willey. Two people wearing spikes that we passed in the col between Field and Willey indicated they regretted their decision not to bring snowshoes. The spur to Avalon peak has one spot at the very top with ice but you can still get around it easily. On the way down I packed down a couple inches of snow on the Cascade Loop trail.
