After some consideration, we decided to make an attempt to Mt. Jefferson.
From the start, the Jewell trail was previously broken with about 5 inches of new powder on top. Made good time toward treeline at around 2 miles. Above there, a broken trail was nonexistent with a slight vision of the trail corridor. Slow going through unconsolidated snow, knee to waist deep drifts for about .3 miles in 50 minutes. Kept looking back with hope some young people would come up and help us break the trail out. NOPE! These two old guys decided to call it a day.
The trail is in great shape below treeline which may be spiked, where above treeline will need snowshoes. On our descent, we met two guys on snowshoes carrying snowboards with hopes to board down somewhere. Hopefully the trail is broken out to ridge line. New snow/rain next couple of days will change everything. short, But a good day out. |
