Trail Maintenance Notes

Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The hike in the lower and middle sections was easy for Pepper, but the upper was bad. The only hikers above me had deep foot prints in dense snow and he had to jump from one to the other with wet fur from below that grew snowballs. Later in the day longer legged dogs on a more packed trail had no problems. Mt. Kinsman trail was reportedly better for dogs being packed. We met a nice short legged spaniel type dog, Cooper, who came up that trail.

Comments
Comments: I made all the wrong choices. I skipped using Mt. Kinsman trail hoping to find a packed trail for Pepper to use. It turned out Mt. Kinsman had been packed while my route was difficult for the mightly tough little dog up high. I put on snowshoes to attempt to create a packed trail and it helped some but not enough. The snowshoes slowed me down by diving into footprints or slanting from being part on the footpath and part off it. It took more hikers and warmer temps to make the going easy for the Pepper. I would recommend light traction for the numerous ledgy wet/slush areas, but I would not recommend snowshoes, since the footpath is so narrow and by now fairly well packed and at times slushy for much of the trail. The sun came out just as we left the peak.
