Interesting day on ‘ol Washington. Socked in by clouds and light snow. Visibility was very limited. This made route finding tedious, but not impossible. Carins are above the snow pack above tree line. Ammonoosuc is well blazed in blue to tree line. Then we basically followed the foot path broken out by someone else to the hut.
On Crawford Path we took it carin by carin. There is a large snowfield above the hut, but the snow was sticky and provided good traction. Saw several persons using ice axes and full mountaineering crampons over this section. Probably wise given the steep drop off the snowfield. But crampons make a narrow trail. We used snowshoes from trailhead to summit (yes, even on SUPER steep Ammo) without issue. Snowshoes kept us above the pack and going up without problems. Snowshoe employment also creates a nice, wide, solid path. Just saying...
Rime ice gorgeous. Even if it obscures the signs.
Nice time to snatch this peak in the winter! |
