The conditions were superb for our hike today. Gale River Rd was packed down enough by skiers and snowmobilers with only a trace of new snow; we were able to bare boot it to and from the trailhead from our cars. GT had a few inches of powder over a solid base. We started in light traction then switched to snowshoes about an hour later as the snow seemed softer and deeper (approximately 2-4"). One member of our group opted to use light traction the whole way and did not struggle; the rest of us preferred snowshoes. The snow conditions were the same from the junction of GRT to the summit. Also, the GRT was the same heading towards Galehead (solid base covered with ~2-4" of light snow). It was a great day to be below treeline as we were protected from the fierce wind that was on the summit. |
