Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, January 1, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked in the traditional winter lot which hadn't been plowed in a few days, several inches of snow but no issues getting out with AWD - only one other car in the lot when we returned, I think other people parked in the small lot by the memorial next to the gas station which was plowed. Road not plowed to the summer lot and no where to park there.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Few very small open ones down low but all easy
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One large duck under on the ridge easily 14-16", will be even more annoying with a few more feet of snow, otherwise no issues trail in great shape
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Maddie had a great hike and loved the fresh powder, no major issues for dogs today

Comments
Comments: Snowshoes car to car, good conditions for them today - followed one snowshoe and one bareboot track ahead of us, about 4-5" new fluffy powder increasing to 6-8" in places up high - a few rocks and roots poking out in the first mile but overall pretty good coverage for the beginning of January. Windier with some snow/sleet on the ridge but overall an easy trek out to the summit and back. Passed about 10 people and three dogs on the way down, most in snowshoes but some without that were chewing up the trail. If hiking this peak in the next few days snowshoes will still be the way to go - it was still snowing when we finished and the track is far from consolidated, bare boots or microspikes will have no grip and will destroy the semi-track from the past few days. Overall the perfect way to celebrate the new year - thanks Ali and Maddie for a great day.
