Comments
Comments: Excellent hike today on this first day of January. Temperatures were fairly mild with filtered sunshine and most of the wind gusts buffeted by the trees and forest. There was about 2" of new unpacked snow on the trails on top of whatever solid surface was below. Snowshoes would be overkill and you could get away with bare booting but with less grip and more frustration. Microspikes were perfect to add that extra bit of traction. Decided to hike this loop counter-clockwise for once, when I've always done it the other way in the past, as that is how the Southern N.H. Trail Guide describes it. The entire forest was encased in beautiful ice that shimmered when the sun appeared. Didn't see anyone else until between summits where I passed a nice couple, and then one man at Skatutakee summit.
