Comments: Tuckerman's Ravine/Lion's Head (Summer Route)

Hiked into Hermit Lake on the 28th (Sat) and stayed in the only open 4-walled lean-to shelter. The shelter is adequate for a single night and relatively close to the winter latrine, but its pretty dark and dreary. Wouldn't want to stay here long. In the middle of the day, you need a headlamp in the lean-to. Water at the pump is laden with iron oxide, not bad for you but doesn't taste that great and is tinged brown. We got water from the local stream and boiled for cooking, sleeping bag warmers and drinking.

Our party of 5 hiked up Lion's Head (winter route not open yet) with crampons and hiking poles. I was the only one to bring an ice ax and it was definitely not needed. Never took it out on the way up and practiced some self-arrests on the open snow fields on our way down. Some hikers only wore micro-spikes, but there were a few sketchy areas that I was glad to have my crampons. We all used spikes up to Hermit Lake and back down to Pinkam.

Overall it was a beautiful sunny day with little to no wind in the afternoon until just below the peak.
