Terrific afternoon - a bit over 7 miles RT. Very pleasant woods walk. Snow depth varied from nothing to 6-8" near the ridge. The last mile up to the ridge would have been good on snowshoes but I didn't bring them. Brought microspikes but never felt the need for them. No tracks/evidence of other hikers but there were a LOT of moose tracks and then some other multi-toed creature - when the blazes weren't obvious, I followed the tracks of the multi-toed creature - looked like they knew the trail. Always fun to explore this trail - this is a really good time of year for it - the wet segments have some solid ice (but I did break through a couple times) and the hobblebush leaves are down - YAY!!!!
NOTE: The Woodland Trail is generally not well-marked beyond the Clark Trail - just follow the logging road straight through the log landings - there are no blazes in the log landings - I wasn't sure I was on the trail but I was. Then, keep going and you will pass the cemented cairn. From there, you will start to see some faded yellow blazes (there are a couple between the cairn and the beaver pond). Keep on going all the way to the beaver pond and then there are some wooden stakes with yellow tape on them to show you the way around the first really submerged skid road. Very wet in there. Good blazing up to ridge after that. |
