Perfect trail conditions today: the road and trails have a nice crunch and are well packed. There is some visible and not so visible ice here and there also. Rocks and roots are decreasingly visible until ~ 2.5 miles into the trail. I wore (sharp) Hillsound spikes the entire trip and was very pleased. Based on previous intel I left the snowshoes in the car and never once regretted it. On ascent I took a couple off official trail sections which worked out fine however I did not take the first stretch of old trail along the river: it wasn't packed out well and looked a little soft so I opted for the 'new' zig-zag up the left bank.
The day got better as the day went on and by the time I got to the top I was rewarded with stunning views. Winds weren't as bad as I expected so I got to linger for a bit on the deck and had lunch at the first ridge vista on the way out. About a dozen or so other out enjoying the day also. A really good trek to a wonderful peak! |
