When I saw that the road was open to the halfway point, I decided I better grab this one next. Maybe tomorrow something will happen for xmas that will end up closing that road. #21 for the old man. Yeehaw.
Down low, recommend spikes, as you would have to aim your snowshoes between rocks constantly. It's pretty darn hard now, boot packed. Up higher, after the sharp turn away from the brook (sign says 'last sure water'), go another tenth or so and there's a nice spot to enjoy view and put on shoes. The snowshoeing improves from there as you go higher, and is real good up in the switchbacks. That last 300 yards above treeline, I kept the snowshoes on, but there was some rocks to pick your way around. Someone told me it was about a 50mph wind up there, sounds about right. Beautiful sun broke out and blue bird skies, whooo-eeee, it was nice with all the rime sparkling up there. |
