Carter Dome, NH |
| Trails: |
Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail |
| Date of Hike: |
Sunday, December 22, 2019 |
| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Ample space in NMB lot. It is icy, however. |
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts |
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Both crossings on Carter Dome Trail required some thought. It appears that water receded significantly in last few days so there are air pockets under the ice in many places. Watch your step. Also, with warmer daytime temperatures streams were flowing more freely on the descent. |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A number of step-overs on NMB Trail, and one step over and duck under near junction with Carter Dome Trail, Several duck-unders on Carter Dome Trail, before Zeta Pass. |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw only one. A good trip for dogs. |
| Bugs: |
None, of course. |

| Comments: |
We used spikes to Zeta Pass and opted for snowshoes for the rest of the way up. While we could have made it in spikes we wanted to smooth out the path, since the stretch from Zeta Pass to the summit was in pretty bad shape. Marty and I (mostly Marty) worked to try and fill in some of the postholes. |
