Started with microspikes up Airline. Would have suffices, but trail only barely packed and the snow isn't consolidated, so we switched to snowshoes at about .4 miles, and that was perfect until about mid-way where the snow hasn't yet filled in between the boulders. Crampons might have been better, but stuck with snowshoes until back to spikes above treeline, which gave perfect traction entire surface is either granite, bare ice, or hard "styrofoam" snow. These conditions prevailed all the way between Adam's and Madison summits. Valley Way down was much more packed, though still loose/powdery. Airline should be better packed since our group of 7 and the few other snowshoers we saw passed through. |
