Finally the Lodge put up a sign asking people not to hike/posthole the ski trails - YAY! Terrific morning - I just poked around the ski trails. Snow was not deep enough to snowboard so I took the fat XC skis with skins built in and poked around. Loop was around 4 miles, about 1000' of elevation gain/loss. "survival-skied" the descents and it wasn't pretty.
I checked out the upper junction of Dukes/Whitney to see the snow coverage - it was VERY bony on Dukes. Some waterbars were open on the lower portion of Back 80 - I was glad I wasn't going downhill on that trail!!! No evidence anyone had been on these XC trails - perfect winter wonderland!!!!
NOTE: the lower section of 93Z coincides with the recent logging road - blue blazes were few and far between. Given the intersecting logging/skidder roads, I was glad to find occasional blue blazes/diamonds. Beware if you are coming from the Lower Manning Trail - there is no indication the logging road IS the ski trail!!!!! Snow was EXTREMELY shallow (like 1-2" deep) on the logging road. |
