Comments: Last minute decision this morning to go for a hike. Regrettably, I based my decision to use Hillsounds instead of snow shoes this morning after reading some reports from others. I swore at myself most of the hike up when I realized that snow shoes (which I use 95% of the time in winter) would have been the best choice. It not only would have been less exerting but I wouldn't have trashed the trail as I did following a prior hiker's tracks (who also did not use snow shoes). Had thought the rain and warm temperatures would have left the trail bonier as described in conditions around the Whites this week by others. There was plenty of snow cover on this route. That being said, conditions are not ideal- deeper snow and drifts abound from 3500 to the summit; in many areas, but especially on the steep section below the ridge, the snow is not adhering to underlying rocks or ice, making for tedious descent, even for crampon users. Only a few others out this morning and like me, none in snow shoes. Views tremendous!
