Trails
Trails: Cadot Trail, Thumbs Up Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, December 19, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at the start of Cadot Trail on Old Dublin Road in Hancock. The pulloff was plowed recently, but not after the latest snowfall. However, it was easy to pull in next to the gate without blocking it.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several small drainages, none of them an issue.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The woods road portion of Cadot has several large blowdowns, including one massive walkunder that has been trimmed. It would be good to see some nice wooden signs on these trails instead of the laminated laser-printed ones, which aren't very durable in the elements.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure, but dogs on Harris Center trails must be leashed.
Bugs
Bugs: Ha. Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: A very cold day on these peaks, but the woods offered pretty good protection from the wind, especially along the ridge. Some may want snowshoes on these trails, but I found them too thin and bony, and went with spikes. Snow depths ranged from 2-4 in. More snow is needed to smooth things out and fill in the rocks.

No evidence of human foot traffic at all on Cadot, but Thumbs Up had been broken out by a booter. I didn't stick around too long at the summit of Skatutakee, but Thumb was fairly pleasant, being shielded from the wind. The bright sun also helped. The recently re-cleared outlook on Thumb really improves the view to Monadnock, the Wapack Range and down into central MA.

The descent was a bit colder as I was walking into the wind. Beautiful light in the woods though and overall a great day on these peaks.
