| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked in the Cannon Tram parking lot - plenty of room, the Tram is not operating yet. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular |
|

| Water Crossing Notes: |
No real water crossings on this route; a small brooklet not too far up from the parking lot was easily crossed. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Maybe a couple of leaners, but no real blowdowns. Blazing and signage seemed okay. Alas, parts of the Kinsman Ridge Trail, worn deeply into the rotten rock, could use rebuilding or rerouting. |

Given prior experience on this route, recent trail reports from the general area, and recent weather, including a skiff of snow to hide much of the ice, I opted to use full crampons from the get-go. I did not regret my decision, and though I carried snowshoes, microspikes, and an ice axe, crampons -- and poles to help with balance etc. -- were useful from start to finish. Due to the new snow, it was hard to tell exactly how much ice there was, but it seemed there was quite a bit, plus the rain-soaked-and-refrozen hardpack. There were some bony places down low and in the last few hundred yards before the Rim Trail. Descending the iciest, steepest spots of the trail was awkward, but not quite as bad as I thought it would be. There were just a few places that still had some running water. |
