 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
As other folks have, we parked about 4.5 mi. or so down Parmenchenee Road out of Wilson Mills, ME. Parked at the junction of Parmenchenee Road and Abbott Brook Road, at a large plowed out area at this fork.
The road was ribbed or corduroy like icy road covered by a recent dusting of snow. We laid on the car brakes a few time to test for "skid;" conditions were terrific today for driving the road. (Bosbuck camp vehicles ply up and down the road with tire chains on their trucks..."ribbing" the road pretty good. There was NO sand on the road at all, so conditions will vary all winter. |

This was a scrappy outing today, with enough snow to make it a workout to boot. In snowshoes for the entire hike.
From where we parked, walked north on Abbott Brk. Road 0.4 tenths to a sno-mo or logging road that turned westerly and led up to the col between the two peaks. The road was nice and open to about 1600', then it began to get brushy and full of whippets.
We climbed Hell Gate first. Went up its south ridge, which was rocky, cliffy, and scrappy. Found the summit canister easy enough. Descended SE'ly towards the col; this was okay in places, but again, rocky, scrappy and cliffy.
From the col we climbed SE'ly towards the western sub-bump. Scrappy down low; it got more open as we climbed. The flatish col between the sub-bump and the summit was more open and went pretty fast in comparison to the rest of the day. Found the summit canister easy enough.
Dropped off the N/NE ridge, dense at the top, more open as we descended. Hit the road (phew!) and walked 0.2 mi. north back to our car.
Nice to get these done. Good day with JEM3. |
