This was a great winter hike. We broke trail the whole way, in anywhere from 6-12†of fluffy fresh powder. Trail was a good, steady climb after the first mile, with a few short steeper sections. We turned around about a quarter mile from Garfield Ridge because my dog was getting too cold, even in full winter gear (temperature was 12F when we started, and around 0F at 4300’). I wore ascent snowshoes with lifts and good traction and my companion switched between standard snowshoes and microspikes. We didn’t see another soul on the trail all day (8:30AM-2:30PM). By the time we got back, the first mile or so of the trail had been groomed, though. |
