Comments
Comments: Arrived at 8:45AM and walked up to the trail info sign to get a feel for the trail. It felt like loose powder with a few solid steps, but otherwise well-enough packed down. I decided against snowshoes to start, but took them with me. I started with gaiters and spikes instead. About halfway up the incline, I took a seat and switched from spikes to 12-point crampons to deal with the non-solid snow. This was a good choice. In the alpine zone, the trail diverged in a couple directions and I ended up bushwhacking in snow up to my hips. I fought my way back to the trail, and continued up to the Lakes hut. This was far enough for the day, as Crawford Path to Washington or Monroe looked very unclear. I turned around and headed for home, and was down from the hut in less than two hours. It was a perfect day in terms of weather and wind.
