Comments
Comments: Snowshoes round trip. If I didn't have them, I'd still be up there this evening.

The abandoned trail hadn't seen any use since yesterday's snowfall, so snowshoes were needed from the getgo (1 foot of snowpack down low). Joining the Stony Brook Trail proper, the most recent hiker had thankfully worn snowshoes. Snowpack increased to 2 feet on the ascent and closer to 3 feet at the Carter Moriah junction. No sign of recent activity southbound.

No one had been above the initial ledges, so it was light trailbreaking/trailfinding thereafter. Generally an inch or two of new powder, except some extended stretches in which the trough had drifted in, as well as areas of deeper drifts. Snowpack on the ridge looks to be 3-4 feet. The steeps up to the summit were fine in snowshoes with no blue ice visible.

The other side of the Carter Moriah Trail looked pretty chewed up by barebooters; very glad I didn't go this way.

There was a barebooter ascending on my way down, fortunately followed by a snowshoer. They were postholing through the snowpack into running water underneath, so it looked particularly unappealing. No idea how far they went, as they had just started the ridge around sunset.

Chilly afternoon with the summit in the clouds. Mid winter conditions in early December.
