Barebooted to Hancock Loop Trail over 3-4†fresh snow. Snowshoes for the Loop. Not totally necessary until the ridge, but televators were much appreciated. Traction was excellent. We went clockwise.
Once on the ridge it was 6-8†of fresh snow on a harder, boot-diveted base. Many deeper drifts, knee and mid thigh deep. (For those who don’t know, even if the lower trails are packed out, Hancock Ridge is often quite drifted.) We has a nice snowshoe trough going although it would have taken a few more sets of snowshoes before becoming a nice consolidated track. Breaking trail was a joy - hard work but not too hard - and it was a winter wonderland up there!
Somewhat amazingly (but guess we shouldn’t really be amazed by this anymore), two fellows came up behind us CARRYING their snowshoes, admitting that they were “too lazy†to put them on. ??? Thankfully, Junior and his person, who WAS wearing snowshoes, were doing the loop CCW and hopefully smoothed things out a bit.
*Please leave nice tracks for all who follow. Thank you!* |
