Substantial new snow, broken by one barebooter when I arrived. I used snowshoes the entire route, which proved to be essential. The barebooter had turned around on the Ammo Tr. just before the highest crossing.
Trail breaking was difficult on the upper trail and route finding was challenging in a couple of spots.
Above treeline there was considerable unconsolidated snow, including deep unsupportive drifts. Snowshoes made sense above treeline, where the trail breaking was fairly exhausting.
A mountaineering axe was helpful on the steep pitch going up Monroe and on the side slope headed up Crawford Path to Washington. By the return trip, a handful of folks had been up to the hut, so the trail is well packed. Slush is forming, which could make for icy conditions. |
