After yesterdays Big Bickford bushwhack attempt, I read up on how other NETC folks had tackled that peak and a few had climbed the Skook to around 3000 ft, and then went across to Big Bickford. It made sense, so I went to look over that area of the Skook today. Well, of course, I compulsively kept going up the Skook after that, and tried for Garfield ridge. I got to the alpine sign just before the ridge, and decided I better test my headlamp. Good thing I did, it was dead, so I rushed back down and got out just in time. At the car in darkness at 5:30.
The trail has a lot of leaves and some mud/leaf porridge in places, but is largely set to make good time. There was a touch of snow or sleet, near the ridge, it was like little white pellets. It doesn't take much of that to make the rocks really slippery, I fell hard and my left arm will be screwed up tomorrow, so take it from me.
Another great adventure; very cool the way you get glimpses of the immense headwall as you approach the ridge.   |
