 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
New Colony Road got rougher the further I drove to get to the trailhead for Orange Cove Trail. The AMC Trail Guide (4th edition) says to go to the end of the pavement on New Colony Rd and park on the right before the gate. But this section of the dirt road was severely eroded, and I doubted my Toyota corolla's ability to reach the designated parking spot. I parked off the left side of the road beside some apple trees, immediately after the road takes a sharp turn to the right. The place is very quiet, and my car wasn't in anyone's way. |

After the severe winds that swept through the area the other day, I was surprised to find only a couple minor blowdowns on both Mowglis & Elwell trails. They were all easily circumvented. |

I'd traveled the eastern & central sections of the Elwell Trail, from Newfound Lake to the summit of Mt. Mowglis. With this hike, I finally tackled the one remaining section between Mt. Mowglis and the junction with the Mowglis Trail.
All the mud puddles on Orange Cove Trail were iced over as I started the hike around 11:30 in the morning. The beaver pond about 1 mile in was very still and beautiful. I got a nice view of the tower on Mt. Cardigan near the eastern end of the pond.
On the way towards Mt. Mowglis, I popped out on some open ledges that offered great views into Cardigan Reservation. I heard turkey vultures squawking above the trees most of the way between Mts. Mowglis & Oregon.
This western end of the Elwell Trail seemed as lightly used as the sections between Oregon and Bear Mts. Lots of prints, markings, and scat left by moose, deer, & coyotes. The area is very pleasant and has a wild feel to it. |
