We bushwhacked from the road up to the north ridge of South Sugarloaf and then followed it up to the summit. The woods were mainly open and we didn't hit anything too steep. The highpoint is recognized and has some very nice views. We continued up towards Hale, finding open woods, with some thick exceptions. The bump to the north or Hale was fairly thick. The south side of the bump is a straight drop. We were able to get off of it by jogging west and then returning to our line south. We worked our way up to Hale, hitting the Fire wardens trail below the NW bump. We headed down the Hale Brook Tr. to a point below the switch backs. We slabbed towards the East peak in good woods, hitting slightly thicker woods in the col and on the accent of the peak. Very nice views from ledges below the recognized highpoint. We returned the way we came, heading down the Hale Brook trail, which had some black ice, but never enough to warrent traction. |
